The National Catholic Office for the Deaf estimates that 96% of Catholics are unchurched. Many churches in DRC Congo cannot afford to offer ASL for the Deaf Community therefore; they do not attend mass or receive the sacrament of reconciliation regularly.
A deaf Catechist has to ride a Bicycle for 50-120 km through the dusty roads under the scorching sun to reach a Deaf community that can gather once or twice in Three (3) Months.
Many catechetical programs do not have the resources available to provide qualified interpreters for instruction therefore; formation for the Deaf is not always available.
The diocese of Uvira is committed to offering mass, reconciliation, and formation to our deaf brothers and sisters in DRC Congo. To learn more about how you can donate or support our Office, please contact:-
